Artist Statement
Inspired by the passage of time and its effects on the psyche, Jacob Hanley’s work investigates the search for a sense of solace amidst the ever-changing seasons of life. Whether these seasons are joyful, bleak, turbulent, or simply mundane, Hanley’s work explores the potential for fertility to be found in each one. The time-intensive nature of graphite drawing is a key element of his process—one in which the gradual emergence of a figure or scene demands continual reflection on the subject matter and its significance. This process results in monochromatic works that do not offer an exact representation of reality but rather a softer, more delicately nostalgic portrayal of it—a portrayal that mirrors the ways in which Hanley reflects upon and attempts to find the silver linings of his own experiences; past and current alike.
