RIPPLE

Thesis Exhibition

In Ripple, Jacob Hanley explores the necessity of finding balance within life. Throughout the series of graphite drawings, the refined structure of the human subjects contrast with the loose, impressionistic texture of the water, resulting in compositions that aim to find and embrace the harmony between these juxtaposing elements. Through the creation of each work, Hanley exercises the act of both maintaining and relinquishing control when appropriate—a practice that can similarly be applied in achieving a more balanced mindset.

Ripple repeatedly challenged Hanley to transcend the levels of predictability that he often finds comfort in, teaching him how to better balance both spontaneity and structure. In the same way, he invites viewers to recognize the elements of their lives that are worth pouring effort and thought into, and those that are simply beyond control.
